How to Repair a Leaking Air Conditioner Expansion Valve

The expansion valve in your air conditioner is an essential part. If this part is damaged, missing or not working in any way, the air conditioner is not going to work the way that it should. If you find that there is a leak, you will want to repair it right away. Here are the tools that you will need as well as some steps that will guide you.

Tools and Materials Needed
  • Caulk
  • Caulking gun
  • Manual
  • Screwdriver
Step 1 - Consult Your Manual

Before you even begin doing any work on the expansion valve or the air conditioner at all, you will want to make sure that you check out the air conditioner manual. Consult the manual to see how to gain access to the expansion valve on your model. You will mostly likely need a screwdriver. Be sure to unplug the air conditioner and let it cool before going into it and trying to take anything apart. You may find that water comes out when you let it sit.

Step 2 - Caulk

Once you have found the right area and have access to the expansion valve, remove it and use the caulking gun to repair the leak. In order to use the caulking gun you will first have to fill it with the caulk insert. These can be bought at any hardware store and are simple to put in. All you need to do is puncture the top after you place the insert in and then use the lever to squeeze out the caulk from the tube. Then move the nozzle back and forth so that you cover the hole and the area around if need be. You will be able to cover the hole with caulk and fill it completely. Be sure to let it dry before putting it back into the air conditioner. You do not want to start it before it has been completely sealed and fixed. If you put it in too early the air circulating could damage it.

Step 3 - Test

Now that you have gotten everything put back together, you can test the valve to make sure that it is working properly. You will want to run the air conditioner for a few hours and then check to make sure that nothing is leaking and no problems are occurring. If everything is running smoothly, you can just check on it once a month or so. If you are having problems though, you will want to turn the air conditioner off and then consult the manual again. You can take it apart and repeat the steps to try to remedy the problem.

If you are still having trouble, then consult a professional to help. Be sure that if at any time you don’t know what you are doing or are second guessing yourself, that you contact a professional to take over. You do not want to persist and do more damage to the air conditioner.
